GTA VI Preorders Hit About $260M in the First Week
Analysts estimate the largest opening week of digital preorder spend on record, with launch-week sales projections stretching into the billions if historical curves hold.
At a glance
- Preorders opened
- June 25, 2026
- First-week estimate
- About $260M worldwide digital preorder spend
- Tracked markets sample
- ~$180M across the U.S. and five major European markets
- Launch-week projection range
- $3.25B–$5.2B cumulative sales (modeled)
Preorders opened June 25, and the first week already looked unlike a normal AAA campaign. Analytics firm Newzoo estimated roughly $180 million in digital preorder spend across the United States and five major European markets alone — a sample that already dwarfs most full launch weeks elsewhere in the industry.
Extrapolating from historical GTA V player distribution, that scales to about $260 million worldwide for the opening week — the biggest preorder start Newzoo has tracked for any title. The number is an estimate, not a Take-Two filing, but the directional signal is hard to dismiss.
Using historical preorder curves, the same analysis projects somewhere between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in cumulative sales by the end of launch week. Even the low end would redefine entertainment launch math for a console-timed single-player release.
How to read a $260 million week
Preorder dollars are not the same as final attach rates, refund-adjusted revenue, or Ultimate versus Standard mix. They are a leading indicator of cultural urgency: people are paying early for a November date they already believe in.
The console-first plan does not appear to have cooled demand. If anything, the scarcity of a dated PC SKU may be concentrating spend into the PlayStation and Xbox storefronts that are live now.
What the projections still leave out
- Physical retail attach that may lag digital charts.
- Regional pricing differences and tax treatment.
- How many preorders convert to day-one play versus sit unused.
- Whether Ultimate Edition uptake stays elevated after reviews land.
Investment versus appetite
Development spending for GTA VI is widely estimated in the $1 billion to $1.5 billion range. The early preorder surge suggests demand is matching that investment long before November 19 — which is exactly the narrative markets want to hear heading into Take-Two's next earnings checkpoints. Treat the models as scenarios, and treat Rockstar's official storefront performance as the ground truth you can actually observe week to week.
