Background
Calvin 'Cal' Hampton grew up in a single-story cinder-block house on Big Pine Key, raised by his mother after his father - a shrimper - disappeared during a storm in 1998. Whether the old man drowned or used the hurricane as cover to skip town with his debts is a question Cal has never resolved, and the ambiguity seeded a lifelong distrust of official narratives. Cal was a bright kid who tested well but couldn't sit still in school, eventually dropping out at sixteen to work odd jobs around the Keys: bait shop clerk, dock hand, pest control, satellite dish installer. His friendship with Jason began when both were doing grunt work for a Keys charter fishing operation - Jason driving the boats, Cal maintaining the radios. They bonded over cheap beer, shared poverty, and a mutual contempt for the tourists who treated the Keys like a theme park. When Jason moved into Brian's orbit, Cal followed, finding a niche as the operation's unofficial communications man - monitoring Coast Guard frequencies, police scanners, and marine weather bands from a cluttered spare bedroom filled with equipment he'd accumulated over years of obsessive tinkering. Cal's life is small by design. He rarely leaves the Keys, rarely leaves his house, and rarely engages with the world beyond his scanner feeds and browser tabs. He's not lazy - he's afraid, though he'd never frame it that way. The internet confirmed every suspicion Cal ever had about the world, and the world outside his door seems to confirm the internet.
Personality
Cal is the kind of person who sees patterns in everything - and is right just often enough to be dangerous. His conspiracy thinking isn't performative; it's a genuine cognitive framework through which he processes a world that has never made sense to him. He's paranoid about government surveillance, skeptical of corporate motives, and convinced that the Keys are a nexus point for forces most people can't perceive. He's also funny about it, delivering his theories with a deadpan sincerity that makes them entertaining rather than exhausting. Beneath the tinfoil, Cal is deeply lonely and deeply kind. He'd give Jason his last beer without being asked, and he checks on Brian's boat yard equipment without being paid. His friendship with Jason is the most important relationship in his life, and Jason's increasing absence - pulled away by Lucia and bigger scores - is a wound Cal doesn't know how to address. He self-medicates with alcohol, internet rabbit holes, and the comforting hum of scanner static.
Appearance
Cal is a wiry, pale man in his early thirties who looks like he hasn't seen the sun despite living in the Keys - a testament to how much time he spends indoors. He has unkempt brown hair that he occasionally corrals under a trucker cap, and a patchy beard that never quite fills in. His wardrobe consists almost entirely of oversized band t-shirts (mostly classic rock and obscure metal), basketball shorts, and Crocs. He wears blue-light-blocking glasses he ordered online, and his fingernails are perpetually stained with the residue of whatever electronics project he's currently dismantling.
Skills & Abilities
Cal's technical expertise with radio communications, scanner systems, and electronic surveillance is genuinely impressive - self-taught and eccentric, but effective. He can intercept and decode Coast Guard patrol schedules, monitor police dispatch frequencies in real-time, and rig improvised jamming equipment from consumer electronics. His knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum is encyclopedic, if unsystematically organized. In the field, Cal is unreliable. He's a poor shot, a nervous driver, and prone to freezing under pressure. His value is entirely behind the scenes - providing intelligence, maintaining communications equipment, and occasionally hacking into poorly secured networks. He also has an oddly detailed knowledge of Leonida's geography, waterways, and wildlife patterns, accumulated through years of obsessive research into what he believes are government ecological manipulation programs.
Storyline
Cal exists on the periphery of Act I's main action, providing scanner intel for Brian's runs and serving as Jason's sounding board during downtime. His missions are low-key and character-driven - helping Jason with small tasks, sharing conspiracy theories that occasionally contain kernels of useful intelligence, and providing comic relief. But Cal's monitoring picks up chatter that foreshadows the larger threats converging on the Keys, making him an unlikely early-warning system. In Act II, Cal's role becomes more critical and more tragic. As Jason and Lucia's operations expand, Cal's intelligence becomes genuinely valuable - but his anxiety about the escalating danger manifests in increasingly erratic behavior. He begins documenting everything, building elaborate connection maps on his bedroom wall, and drinking more heavily. A pivotal mission sees Cal intercept communications that expose a betrayal within the Keys Circle, forcing him into a rare moment of direct action. Act III pushes Cal to his breaking point. The federal attention drawn by Jason and Lucia's activities puts Cal's surveillance operation - and Cal himself - directly in the crosshairs. Whether Cal becomes a cooperating witness, goes underground, or stands with Jason to the bitter end is one of the story's most emotionally resonant choices, testing whether the bond between two Keys drifters can survive the tsunami they've unleashed.
Relationships
Jason Duval is Cal's best friend and, in many ways, his only real connection to the world outside his house. Cal admires Jason's confidence and physicality - qualities Cal lacks - and Jason values Cal's intelligence and unwavering loyalty. Their friendship is the emotional heart of the Keys Circle storyline, and its potential fracture under pressure is one of the game's most affecting arcs. Brian Heder is Cal's employer in a loose sense - Cal provides scanner intelligence in exchange for cash, beer, and the sense of belonging that comes with being useful. Cal respects Brian's experience but privately believes Brian is dangerously complacent about the changing landscape of Leonida's criminal world. Their relationship is functional rather than warm. Lucia Caminos is someone Cal instinctively distrusts - not because of anything she's done, but because her arrival disrupted the stable dynamic Cal had built with Jason. As Lucia proves her value and loyalty, Cal's suspicion slowly gives way to grudging respect, though he never fully shakes the feeling that she's pulling Jason toward something none of them can handle.
