89% of GTA VI Preorders Are Ultimate, Sensor Tower Says

New mid-August tracking claims nearly nine in ten GTA 6 preorders are the $100 Ultimate Edition. That is a different signal from last summer's 40% fan poll - and it is still not a Take-Two filing.

Updated August 18, 2026

Sensor Tower told GamesIndustry.biz that about 89 percent of Grand Theft Auto VI preorders are the $99.99 Ultimate Edition rather than the $79.99 Standard Edition. Xbox Series X|S sat near 90 percent Ultimate; PlayStation 5 sat near 88.5 percent. NME and other outlets amplified the split on August 17.

That is a much richer premium mix than the community poll from late June, which had about four in ten respondents saying they planned to buy Ultimate. Polls sample loud fans. Store telemetry, if accurate, samples people who already paid.

Take-Two has not published its own Ultimate attach rate. On the August 7 earnings call, Strauss Zelnick said Rockstar got Standard and Ultimate pricing right and that the company was happy with the mix - qualitative color, not a percentage.

Twenty dollars is a small step relative to an $80 floor that already reset AAA pricing. Ultimate's extras - vehicles, weapons, apparel, and story-threaded content - are the pitch. Whether that pitch is 'worth it' still depends on how often those items appear in the campaign, which nobody outside Rockstar has played.

A tracker split is not a Take-Two attach rate - but it is the loudest mix signal of mid-August.

What the 89 percent figure is and is not

Sensor Tower is a third-party tracker. Its split is reported research, not a Rockstar Newswire number and not a line in Take-Two's 10-Q. Treat it as a directional read on digital preorder mix during the window the firm measured.

Preorder mix can still shift after reviews, price promotions, and the November 20 cutoff for announced preorder bonuses. Launch-week Standard buyers who waited for footage are invisible in an August snapshot.

  • Reported: ~89% Ultimate overall; ~90% Xbox; ~88.5% PlayStation.
  • US list prices remain $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate.
  • Not disclosed: Take-Two's own Ultimate attach rate.

Why the upsell is landing this hard

Karl Kontus of Sensor Tower noted that premium editions usually do well in preorder windows, but called this split unusual. The $20 gap sits on top of a new $80 standard, so the psychological jump to $100 is smaller than the jump from a $70 game to a $100 bundle used to be.

Rockstar also framed Ultimate as content woven through Jason and Lucia's story rather than a disconnected cosmetic dump. That language sells a first playthrough, which is exactly when preorders happen.

How this differs from the June fan poll

The older 'four in ten' figure was a community poll, useful as vibe and weak as commerce. Engaged fans over-index in polls; they also over-index in day-one digital preorders. The two numbers can both be 'real' without describing the same population.

Casual buyers who pick up Standard at retail in November would pull the Ultimate share down. Digital-only Ultimate, if that remains the case in your region, would pull it up. Check your storefront's format list before assuming the global mix applies to your shelf.

Should you still buy Standard?

Yes, if you want the complete single-player game and do not care about the premium vehicle, weapon, and apparel lane. Social proof that 'everyone' bought Ultimate is not a systems requirement.

Buy Ultimate if you already planned to use those extras on day one. Do not buy it because a tracker percentage made Standard feel like a lesser citizen. Rockstar has not said the story is gated behind $100.

What is confirmed right now

For “89% of GTA VI Preorders Are Ultimate, Sensor Tower Says,” the durable confirmed baseline is still narrow: Grand Theft Auto VI remains scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S unless a newer Rockstar or Take-Two update supersedes that plan. Preorders opened June 25, 2026; US Standard is $79.99 and Ultimate is $99.99; preload begins November 12; physical copies include a download code in the box.

Anything beyond those entries-especially Trailer 3 timing, undated PC plans, or anonymous mechanics-stays unconfirmed until Rockstar publishes equivalent detail. Leaks are not confirmation.

How to separate reporting from rumor

Read “89% of GTA VI Preorders Are Ultimate, Sensor Tower Says” as a map of claims with different strengths. Rockstar Newswire posts, the GTA VI product page, and Take-Two releases or filings are official. Reputable outlets can report independently sourced information, but that is still reporting. Screenshots, Discord tips, and AI clips begin as unverified.

A useful habit is to rewrite each viral sentence until only the evidenced fragment remains. “Take-Two hosts earnings August 7” can be calendar fact; “therefore Trailer 3 drops August 6” is inference. Keep those clauses in different labels so repetition cannot launder the second into the first.

Buyer checklist before November

If “89% of GTA VI Preorders Are Ultimate, Sensor Tower Says” affects a purchase decision, translate it into practical checks before November 12 preload week: confirm your platform is PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, compare Standard versus Ultimate against published extras, and understand that a boxed copy still requires a substantial download.

Calendar storage cleanup, account region, and any subscription trial end dates tied to preorder offers. Do not treat undated PC hopes or multiplayer timing as part of the November 19 console basket unless Rockstar adds them in writing.

  • Verify storefront platform and edition before paying.
  • Plan disk space ahead of the November 12 preload.
  • Ignore AI “gameplay” when choosing an edition.
  • Re-check Rockstar channels the week of launch for patch notes.

What we will update next

The next revision of “89% of GTA VI Preorders Are Ultimate, Sensor Tower Says” should cite a newer primary document, a Rockstar consumer announcement, or a clearly labeled correction-not a louder repost of the same claim. If August 7 earnings materials reaffirm November 19 without new creative detail, that still counts as a meaningful corporate update.

We will specifically watch for an official Trailer 3 notice, any dated PC statement, and clarified install or performance guidance. Until those arrive, the honest update may be that the open questions remain open.
