Description

The Grenade is the quintessential explosive throwable in GTA VI, a compact fragmentation device that has been a staple of the series since its inception. In Leonida's urban and rural combat scenarios, a well-placed grenade clears rooms, flushes enemies from cover, and turns parked vehicles into improvised bombs. Its timed fuse allows skilled players to 'cook' throws for airburst detonations that leave no time to react.

Design

The classic pineapple-style fragmentation grenade features a segmented cast-iron body, a safety spoon, and a pull-ring pin. The design is immediately recognizable and intentionally retro, evoking decades of military service. In-hand animations show the player pulling the pin with their teeth in true action-movie fashion.

Performance

Blast radius is generous, dealing lethal damage to anyone within the immediate kill zone and significant injury to those on the periphery. The timed fuse allows for cooking - holding the grenade after pulling the pin to reduce the target's reaction window. Thrown distance depends on the player's aim angle, with a satisfying arc that rewards practice.

Customization

Grenades have no direct customization options, though the player's throwing proficiency may improve with use. Different grenade types in the Throwables category serve as functional alternatives - flashbangs for stun, smoke for concealment, and molotovs for fire.

Locations

Purchasable from Ammu-Nation counters throughout Vice City and rural Leonida from early in the story, and frequently found in enemy weapon caches during missions.

Trivia

  • Cooking a grenade for too long will cause it to detonate in the player's hand - a lethal lesson in timing.
  • Grenades can be thrown through open car windows for instant vehicle kills.
  • The explosion physics interact with Leonida's water, creating a visible splash column when detonated in shallow swamps.
  • NPCs will audibly panic and attempt to flee when they hear a grenade land nearby.
  • Completing a mission using only grenades awards bonus RP in certain challenge modes.
