Description
The Smoke Grenade is a tactical concealment device that deploys a thick cloud of opaque smoke, breaking line of sight and creating cover where none exists. In GTA VI's Leonida, where open highways and flat terrain leave little natural cover, a well-placed smoke screen can mean the difference between a clean escape and a bullet-riddled failure. It's the thinking criminal's answer to superior firepower.
Design
A cylindrical canister with a pull-ring igniter and multiple smoke emission ports around the body, finished in olive drab with yellow markings indicating its non-lethal classification. The smoke deploys in a billowing column that expands rapidly, rendered with volumetric effects that interact with Leonida's wind and weather systems for realistic dispersal patterns.
Performance
The smoke cloud fully obscures vision within seconds of deployment, blocking both player and NPC line of sight. The screen persists for 15-20 seconds before gradually dissipating, with wind affecting drift direction. Enemy AI loses tracking on targets hidden within the smoke, making it invaluable for repositioning during firefights or masking escape routes from police helicopters.
Customization
Smoke grenades have no direct customization, though colored smoke variants may exist for marking landing zones or signaling during cooperative missions. Their true value is in combination with other tactical gear - pairing smoke with flashbangs creates near-total battlefield control.
Locations
Stocked at Ammu-Nation tactical counters after mid-story progression, and found in military surplus stores and VCPD tactical caches throughout Leonida.
Trivia
- Smoke grenades are one of the few throwables that can reduce a police wanted level by breaking helicopter visual tracking.
- The smoke interacts with Leonida's dynamic lighting, producing dramatic god-ray effects when deployed at sunset.
- Thermal scopes and weapon optics can see through the smoke cloud, giving equipped players a significant advantage.
- Deploying smoke near a fire source tints the cloud with a darker, more acrid coloration.
- Speed-running communities use smoke grenades to skip certain combat encounters by bypassing trigger zones unseen.
