Overview

Vice Storm Engine replaces GTA VI's stock weather state machine with a Gulf-coast-accurate system tuned for Leonida. Instead of random showers, you get fronts that build over hours: muggy Ambrosia mornings, sudden Keys squalls, and Vice City nights where rain turns every tower into liquid neon.

The mod authors volumetric clouds, ground wetness, puddle reflections, and wind that actually moves foliage and boat rigging. Hurricane-adjacent events are rare, telegraphed by in-game weather alerts on the phone, and designed as optional free-roam spectacles - not mission breakers. You can shelter indoors; AI seeks cover; traffic slows on flooded arteries.

This is a GTA VI exclusive pack. It does not reuse GTA V weather mods. All LUTs, particle sheets, and audio beds were captured or synthesized for Leonida's palette: teal ocean, magenta signage, humid greens.

Weather Systems

Six regional climate profiles blend at district borders. Vice City favors humid nights and brief violent rain. The Keys swing between glassy calm and horizontal rain. Grassrivers holds morning fog banks that burn off by noon. Port Gellhorn gets industrial haze and acid-tint drizzle. Ambrosia cooks under dry heat with dust. Mount Kalaga can frost at elevation after cold fronts.

Storm cells have lifecycle stages: build-up, peak, and washout. During peak, lightning uses a custom bolt mesh with delayed thunder based on distance. Hail is rare and can dent vehicle roofs (visual only unless you enable soft damage). Flood planes rise in authored basins - underpasses, marina lots, and a stretch of low Vice City blocks - then recede over 20–40 minutes.

Heat shimmer and mirage effects appear on Ambrosia blacktop above 95°F simulated. Night wetness increases reflection intensity on neon corridors without forcing RT on unsupported GPUs; raster fallbacks still look wet, just softer.

Gameplay Impact

Driving physics read wetness: stopping distances stretch, bikes get tippy, boats slam harder in chop. Pedestrians umbrella-swap and sprint for awnings. Certain missions with outdoor sniper lines become harder in peak storm - intentionally. A settings toggle lets you keep visual storms without physics wetness if you prefer stock handling.

Cops and criminals both react: pursuits slow in flood zones; helicopters struggle in high wind. If you run Solar Ascendant, storms boost freeze breath and slow solar recharge - the two mods handshake via a shared weather severity float.

Photographers and clip creators get a director panel: scrub forecast, lock a golden-hour hold, or trigger a one-shot hurricane flyover for filming. These director tools are marked as cheat-adjacent and disable autosave while active.

Audio & Visual Craft

Rain occlusion changes when you enter covered walkways, car interiors, or tunnels. Distant thunder is convolution-based; close strikes are dry and sharp. Wind beds morph by district - palm rattle in the Keys, metal moan in Port Gellhorn, high howl on Kalaga ridges.

Visually, the team rebuilt wet skin response for asphalt, concrete, and metal. Neon signs bleed into puddles with controlled bloom. Cloud shadows move across the map so a sunny street can darken before rain arrives - a storytelling cue as much as a skybox trick.

Performance tiers: Cinematic (RT reflections + high volumetrics), Standard, and Performance (reduced particles, simpler puddles). Expect the 1.2 GB package mostly in textures and baked cloud impostors.

Installation & Compatibility

Install after the game's first patch day tools stabilize. Place ViceStormEngine in your mods tree and enable the weather provider flag so other mods can query severity. Conflicts arise with total weather replacements that hijack the same provider slot - only one provider should run.

Works with vehicle packs, map expansions, and most ENB-style post stacks that read native wetness. Uninstall by removing the folder and clearing the weather_cache directory if you want stock skies immediately.

Roadmap & Credits

Post-launch roadmap includes tornado-adjacent dust columns for Ambrosia, festival fireworks weather clears for Vice City events, and a photographer LUT pack. Community weather presets will be loadable as JSON once the scripting API freezes.

Credits: GulfStreamFX core team, Leonida field recordists for rain beds, and volunteer drivers who logged wet handling telemetry on pre-release handling builds. This is fan work - not affiliated with Rockstar Games.

District Deep Dive

Vice City proper receives the most authorship hours. Ocean Drive reflections were tuned frame-by-frame against trailer stills. Alleys get different drip rates than boulevards. A secret microclimate exists around the tallest tower: wind always feels one notch stronger, rain streaks diagonally, and lightning prefers the spire - great for rooftop scenes.

The Keys chain uses lighter rain drop meshes so water stays readable from boats. Bioluminescent sparkle after storms is a pure fantasy beat - toggleable - that makes night swimming clips sing. Grassrivers fog is density-mapped to wetlands so open water stays clearer than reed beds.

Port Gellhorn drizzle carries a subtle green-brown grade to imply industry without looking like a filter slapped on the whole map. Ambrosia's heat crackle is audio-first; the shimmer is restrained so gunfights stay readable. Kalaga's cold snap can leave temporary frost on guardrails at dawn - it melts as you drive toward the coast.

Troubleshooting

If skies appear pitch black, your post stack may be double-applying exposure - disable one or use the built-in exposure lock. If floods never rise, confirm Gameplay → Flood Planes is on and you are not in a mission that freezes world state. If neon puddles flicker, update GPU drivers and set puddle quality to Standard.

For last-resort resets, delete weather_cache and vice_storm_user.cfg. The mod regenerates defaults on next boot. Report issues with your GPU, RT on/off, and a screenshot of the forecast panel.

Forecast Lab & Authoring

Weather artists paint fronts on a 48-hour timeline with keyframes for cloud density, precip particles, wind vectors, and wetness targets. District blend weights stop Ambrosia dust from looking like Keys salt spray. Lightning preference volumes bias bolts toward towers and crane tips without turning the whole city into a rave strobe.

Flood authorship is conservative: only basins that read clearly in gameplay. We tested chase AI in flooded underpasses for weeks so cops do not path through invisible walls of water. If a mission freezes weather, the flood plane eases down instead of popping dry - less immersion break.

Audio occlusion uses interior probes already present in GTA VI cells. If a custom interior pack forgets probes, rain will sound outdoor-loud inside - report those packs to their authors; we cannot fix foreign probes.

Cinematic Recipes

Recipe Neon Mirror: 11pm, light rain, RT on, drive Ocean Drive at 40 mph, camera chase mid. Recipe Keys Whiteout: peak squall, boat cam low, lights off, Tide Master moon route. Recipe Ambrosia Mirage: heat max, no precip, long lens on blacktop shimmer.

Director panel locks are cheat-adjacent. Do not use them to soft-break timed missions. The panel disables itself when a script requests weather authority.

Hydrology & Flood Authorship

Flood meshes are not full fluid sims. They are authored heightfields with foam skirts and AI avoidance volumes. That keeps 60 FPS possible on mid-range cards while still selling the idea of a Gulf storm.

Drain rates differ by basin: marina lots clear faster than underpasses. If you stand in an underpass as water rises, your character plays a annoyed bark and slow-walks - we do not drown the player in free roam for weather alone.

Boat wash against flood curbs creates an extra spray burst when Tide Master is present. Alone, Storm Engine still sprays, just softer.

Support Window

Pre-claim builds focus on sky and wetness. Post-launch 1.x locks the weather provider API so other mods can depend on severity floats. If another weather mod loads second, we yield and log a toast once per session.

Bug reports need GPU, RT flag, and whether Director Panel was used. "Sky looks wrong" without those three gets a polite template reply.
